2003 saw the opening of Merit RV www.meritcampers.co.nz This yard has taken off with a flourish, selling a large range of new and second hand motorhomes, campervans, and caravans.
Now with three yards, each specialising in a particular market, the business can provide vehicles for every need. "The separation of the business into three yards gives people the opportunity to go to the yard whichever specialises in the type of vehicle which best suits their individual need", Paul Butler, Managing Director explains. The Merit RV yard is managed by Nathan Butler, one of Paul’s sons who is well qualified to advise customers of the features and benefits of owning or even renting a motorhome or campervan. He is aptly supported by Ken McLean who has a number of years experience in motorhoming and brings a fresh perspective to customer service. Justin, Paul’s oldest son is in charge of detailing and grooming.
In 2005 the yard was doubled in size to provide one of the largest selections of quality second hand motorhomes and campervans in New Zealand. "We sell our lifestyle vehicles throughout New Zealand, and have a number of overseas customers. Our overseas customers often purchase to keep or arrange a buy back agreement with us for anything from 3 months upward. This often works out very economically compared to renting." “We are now importing brand new Swift caravans from England which are superb in finish and feature. They are of such good quality that it leaves a lot to be desired in the NZ and Australian manufacture equivalents which are up to 500kg heavier and therefore harder to tow with heavy down loads on the towbar. We have researched the market and believe we are now offering some of the best value new caravans available in New Zealand.”
Merit on Leach sells later model, high-grade cars imported direct from Japan and priced at $9,000 and above. This yard is managed by Paul Butler, who was inspired by his fathers involvement in the motor industry from the early 1950’s, and who helped Paul start into the industry in 1990. He is aptly supported by Terry Kidd who has over 30 years in the industry. Merit on Molesworth sells mainly under $10,000 vehicles mostly traded vehicles from the other yard with a few first time imports to add to the flavour. Craig McMurray capably tends to the needs of customers on thiis yard. With the wide selection of quality vehicles we have available, customers have a wide range of choice but, as with the other yards, Merit RV and Commercials will buy to a customer's requirement if they do not have something specific in stock.
All first-time imports imported vehicles purchased by the Merit Car group undergo stringent inspections, complianced to New Zealand Standards, mechanical servicing, Warrant of Fitness, full grooming and detailing before being sold. Buying a vehicle from Merit on Leach, Merit on Morley or Merit on Molesworth couldn't be easier. Finance and insurance can be arranged on the premises. As a member of Motor Trade Finance, they can offer on the spot finance at rates generally better than the banks and other financiers can offer. Customers can trade in their old vehicle even if they still owe money on it and Merit will settle up the finance owing.
Merit is affiliated to Autosure, a finance and insurance company, which was established in 1986. Autosure, was recently acquired by Vero, is one of largest insurers in New Zealand who insist upon a very high quality product. "The affiliation is like a badge of honour for us," says Paul.
Under Autosure Mechanical Insurance customers are offered one-to-three-year bumper-to-bumper cover on mechanical and electrical components. It offers a 24-hour breakdown help line, towing, accommodation and rental car allowances, and the ability to have servicing and repairs done at an MTA garage.
Offering such insurance gives customers the peace of mind that they would expect with a new car, at a second-hand vehicle price.
Add to all that the friendly and helpful service you will get at the yards and it's not surprising to hear that many of Merit's customers become good friends, dropping into the office for a cup of coffee and a friendly word. " While we operate three yards in response to customer demand, we are mindful of the fact that it is our customers' support has put us in the position to be able to do that for them," says Paul. "We appreciate that support."
